Ancient abbeys, frescoed churches, and small countryside chapels, Monte Amiata is home to stunning examples of sacred places rich in intricate details. Once considered a sacred mountain by the Etruscans, Monte Amiata now hosts not only Christian buildings but also places of worship for other religions, such as Buddhism. Just a stone’s throw from Monte Labbro, a sacred site for the followers of Davide Lazzaretti, you can find the Merigar Center. Founded in 1981, Merigar was the first Gar of the Dzogchen Community and today it houses a rich library, the Great Stūpa, and the Temple of Great Contemplation, inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama.
