The story of a centuries-old onion

Santa Fiora, perched on the southern slopes of Mount Amiata, has always maintained a close connection with the land upon which it stands. Its development and fortune owe much to the presence of cinnabar and the mercury mining industry—a legacy preserved in the Mercury Mines Museum of Mount Amiata. But perhaps the most vital link lies in the Fiora River’s source, which generously provides a constant water resource to the town and the entire region.
Beneath the surface, the earth’s wealth and energy manifest in the splendid “Peschiera”—a large basin that mirrors the sky, surrounding buildings, and tree canopies like a shimmering mirror. The Peschiera Park invites leisurely strolls, where visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquil surroundings.
Just beyond the village, the Bosco della Santissima Trinità Natural Reserve unfolds along the Alta Valle del Fiora. Here, diverse tree species and wildlife thrive, and the sanctuary within the convent holds a mysterious legend—the dragon’s skull, a captivating relic.
