Witches’ retreat and poets’ haven

The narrow alleys and perched houses that compose the village of Piancastagnaio seem suspended in time, shielded by imposing medieval walls and the Aldobrandeschi Castle—a majestic sentinel hewn from volcanic stone. A legacy of the so-called “dark centuries,” this fortress graces the slopes of Mount Amiata, now hosting the village’s festivities and events.
A secluded and romantic centuries-old chestnut grove invites leisurely strolls during the fair seasons, while autumn animates the oldest part of the village with the Crastatone—a grand chestnut festival. In August, the Palio takes center stage.

Not far from the village lies the “Piatto delle Streghe” (Witches’ Plate): an ancient fountain, smoothed by time, rumored to be the site of mysterious Sabbats. Don’t miss the enchanting “Fonti di Borgo,” beautiful springs and ancient washhouses.

Piancastagnaio has also captivated illustrious poets who sojourned here, including Carducci and Montale, gifting their verses to its magical ambiance.
