Hidden outpost in the greenery

The territory of Castell’Azzara, whose village perhaps owes its name to a dice game (“zara”) won by the Aldobrandeschi family, has been a subject of contention and repeated assaults for centuries. Many sought to acquire the privileged position of its Rocca Silvana, near cinnabar deposits and overlooking the valley.

The tall tower and walls are remnants of the impressive fortress immersed in greenery. While not accessible inside, they can be reached via a walk that offers a striking view of the valley.

A must-see is the significant Villa Sforzesca: abandoned after the death of Cardinal Sforza, who commissioned its construction in the 16th century, it has been restored and is now open to visitors, including its interior, in the hamlet of La Sforzesca.

The labyrinth of alleys and characteristic views that constitute the oldest part of Castell’Azzara contrasts with the many trails exploring the lush surrounding nature, where the Grotta del Sassocolato, a fascinating cave, is hidden.
